Reflective Vest (English: Safety Vest) is a common sight in construction areas or traffic. People who typically wear reflective vests include police and traffic officers, security guards, construction workers and site-related personnel, firefighters, etc.

Reflective vests have light-reflecting properties as their name suggests, ensuring high visibility in high-risk accident situations caused by poor visibility, whether day or night, preventing vehicle drivers or machine operators from failing to see and hitting people in the work area.

According to OSHA regulations, employees must wear a high-visibility orange, yellow, or yellow-green vest, shirt, or jacket during daytime work, and wear a retroreflective vest, shirt, or jacket in orange, yellow, white, silver, or bright yellow-green at night.

Reflective vests come in many colors, with 7 colors commonly seen today. Let's look at how each color differs and which color you should wear for your work.

How Do Different Colors of Reflective Vests Differ?

      1. Orange Reflective Vest

The orange reflective vest is the most widely used and commonly seen color, especially on roads. It is an easily noticeable color meant for construction site workers, factory staff, highway police, civil defense volunteers, street sweepers, or general individuals in situations where life and safety are at risk—such as entering dense green forests where living beings and movement are hard to see, or in thick fog and low light.

Orange reflective vests are suitable for daytime use and open spaces in environments where contrast is clear, such as green surroundings, overcast skies, or bright sunlight.

      2. Yellow Reflective Vest

Yellow reflective vests are designed to prevent nighttime accidents because it is a clearly visible color that can be seen from a long distance, matching the color of hazard warning signs or reflective road markers.

People who wear yellow reflective vests are mostly street sweepers, night road construction workers, police, night shift security guards, and emergency responders (rescue workers).

      3. Green Reflective Vest

Green reflective vests are rarely seen and are very similar to yellow, so they are not ANSI-certified. Surveyors and landscapers use this color when working in dark or crowded places, and it is also sometimes used for safety officers.

In addition, those clearly categorized by wearing green reflective vests include outdoor tour guides, park maintenance staff, or outdoor safety officers.

      4. Blue or Light Blue Reflective Vest

Like green, blue reflective vests are not ANSI-certified because they are not meant for wearer safety, but rather to identify roles near water bodies. Thus, lifeguards and beach attendants are often seen wearing them to show people at swimming pools or beach areas who to turn to for help if an incident occurs.

Additionally, cleaning staff are often seen wearing blue reflective vests. However, the dark vest material itself is not bright or fully reflective; instead, it relies more on the reflective strips.

      5. Pink Reflective Vest

Like green and blue, the pink reflective vest is not an official color. It is specially designed to stand out for female personnel in special volunteer work or various awareness campaigns related to women.

      6. Purple Reflective Vest

If you see someone wearing a purple reflective safety vest, you must stay away immediately because they are currently working or have just finished work, and their tasks involve toxic substances and hazardous chemicals.

      7. Red Reflective Safety Vest

The red reflective safety vest is a color used by rescue teams and firefighters because red is the most intense color in the spectrum, making it the most clearly visible even in fire situations with dense flames and smoke. It helps people in danger recognize and spot rescuers from a distance so they can call for help properly.

In addition, red reflective safety vests are sometimes used in various industrial areas, such as manufacturing or construction, to indicate workers handling or working near potentially hazardous materials.

How to Effectively Choose the Right Color Reflective Safety Vest

Reflective safety vests come in many colors and tones depending on the manufacturer. Therefore, in addition to choosing a color that matches the job, there are 4 main criteria to consider:

      1. Choose a reflective safety vest with sufficient prominence and visibility

A vest without reflective properties cannot be called a reflective vest, and it will not provide sufficient safety, especially when working in dark areas or at night. If the color is too light, it may also be hard to see or unclear. Therefore, you should also choose a relatively dark or intense color to ensure clear visibility in all situations.

      2. Choose a reflective safety vest that contrasts well with the working environment

To prevent the wearer from blending into the environment, the reflective safety vest must contrast clearly with the surrounding jobsite and atmosphere. In cases where the vest color blends with the environment, the reflective stripes on the vest still provide contrast. Therefore, choosing a vest with stripes is safer than one without.

      3. Choose a reflective safety vest in a recognizable, widely understood color

The chosen color should be universally understood and recognized in meaning. However, reflective safety vest colors generally rely on human subconscious perception and response. For example, fluorescent yellow is the brightest color; humans react to it quickly, and it remains clearly visible from afar or when moving at high speeds. Meanwhile, orange or red triggers mental associations with danger and warning.

      4. Choose a reflective safety vest with safety certification

For reflective safety vests worn for protection, ANSI certification is essential. ANSI stands for American National Standards Institute, an independent non-profit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards in the United States, including industries, standards developing organizations, trade associations, professionals, technical societies, government, labor, and consumer groups.
