A spirit level is one of the most useful hand tools for leveling and aligning various construction projects, used to measure whether a surface is level or not. Generally, the familiar spirit level contains a greenish liquid with an air bubble inside glass vials mounted horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, depending on the model of the spirit level. Do you know whether the spirit level you use today is accurate? And how can you tell if the spirit level you are using still maintains its precision? Let's find out the answers in this article.
Can a spirit level be inaccurate?
Water level Errors and inaccuracies can occur. Just like other measuring tools, a spirit level can become less accurate over time. You will certainly encounter this problem, especially when it comes to large construction projects on various surfaces where a spirit level is required.
Even if a spirit level is inaccurate, it does not mean you have to throw it away. Spirit levels can be calibrated, which means if your spirit level starts to become inaccurate, there is something you can do. First, let's understand that some types of spirit levels cannot be calibrated, such as standard construction spirit levels, because construction levels are quite rough and not highly detailed. However, the ones recommended for calibration are precision spirit levels, or those used in industrial applications.
Find a level surface
Before starting the tips on testing your spirit level, you must have a 100% level surface to begin with. If the surface is not perfectly level, your spirit level test will not be accurate. You need to find a surface that you are 100% confident is suitable for testing your spirit level.
Place the spirit level
Once you have found a flat surface, place the spirit level on that surface. Now, observe whether the air bubble is centered. If the bubble is not in the center, it indicates that the spirit level is inaccurate. Because of this, you should find a perfectly level surface. On your spirit level, you will see small screws on the side. These are calibration screws used to calibrate the spirit level. Therefore, always keep in mind that the underlying surface must be level. If the bubble in the vial is off-center, adjust the screws until the bubble sits right in the center between the two lines on the vial.
Spirit Level Testing
There are several ways to calibrate a spirit level, but in principle, they are similar: using equipment that can adjust tilt angles, such as a precision angle generator or an elevating beam, alongside reference standards like an electronic level or an auto-collimator used to compare values against the spirit level. The calibration method involves setting the spirit level and the reference standard at the reference level, then adjusting the tilt by turning the adjustment knob of the precision angle generator or elevating beam to the desired calibration points, and recording the readings from both the spirit level and the reference standard.
