Excessive vibration in power tools leads to lost motion, which can affect the user's comfort level and ultimately productivity. MAKITA brings a level of vibration reduction to the lineup Grinder like never before with proprietary SJS II technology. SJS II is a leaf spring and cam gear drive mechanism engineered to reduce vibration for increased operator comfort during extended use. It works by transferring vibration through the wheel accessory spindle and into the CAM component. The vibration causes the cam to press against the leaf spring and absorb vibration to increase operator comfort.

Makita Super Joint System (SJS and SJS II) technology helps prevent motor burnout and improves tool performance, safety, and durability. It works by reducing tool vibration and preventing shocks to the gears and motor if the disc jams in the material during grinding or cutting. This technology is available on several mains-powered angle grinders with wheel diameters from 115 mm to 230 mm, as well as die grinders, wall chasers, and concrete planers in the Makita lineup.

Original Innovation
The first generation of the MAKITA Super Joint System was introduced to help prevent damage to the tool and protect users from injury. SJS II is a mechanical clutch system featuring a coil spring wrapped around an internal drive spindle. The coil tightens around the spindle upon startup to transfer motor power to the drive shaft or spindle smoothly and efficiently. If the blade jams in the material being cut, it could overload the motor, but MAKITA's SJS II instantly disengages the drive to the disc, allowing the drive spindle to spin freely before re-engaging to reduce the risk of gearbox damage and operator injury.
System Development
SJS II technology builds upon the existing system by adding an electronic overload protection system and overload protection for the gearbox and motor. Without SJS II, vibrations from the grinding wheel would be transmitted through the spindle, gears, and motor to the housing, and then to the user's hands and arms. Grinders with SJS II feature a cam and leaf spring added to the spindle designed to absorb disc movement and prevent the transmission of vibration. It also significantly reduces vibration compared to original SJS products.
Benefits
SJS and SJS II technology makes work safer, more comfortable, and more efficient. Reducing tool vibration allows users to operate machines longer before reaching the Exposure Action Value (EAV), where risks must be managed, and before having to stop work at the Exposure Limit Value (ELV). It also makes work easier and more precise through the improved control available to the user. Preventing wear and damage extends tool life, reduces maintenance and replacement costs, and avoids disruptions caused by tool breakdowns.
